The African Print Kimono Delivers Style and Zen

The kimono is a popular formal garment worn in Japan and there are so many places to shop African print kimonos online via retailers of African fashion. The idea of using African wax prints to create the kimono creates a new extension of the Japanese garment in a bid to mesh the core values of both cultures together. In ancient times, kimonos were worn to many important occasions such as weddings and tea parties. Today, the kimono can be worn on a daily basis for just about any type of event. It is so trendy that it fits into any scenario seamlessly and the style is well known enough to be appreciated by many. First, let us take a closer look at how the kimono became so trendy as an article of fashion.

The kimono’s history dates back to the Japanese Heian Period (794-1192). Fabrics were sewn together in straight cuts that made them easy to wear. Over the years, this style evolved and by the Edo era in Japan, the kimono became symbol and cultural marker for the person wearing it. This meant that the quality of the fabric used, colour and pattern choice including the embroidery and prints were critical in reflecting the gender, age and social status of its wearer. Ultimately, this form of representation turned the kimono into a cultural artifact – a form of art, poetry and painting through which stories could be told and history may be preserved. Today, the kimono remains very much a prominent identifier of traditional Japanese culture as it has always been. Check out these African kimono styles and the retailers who sell them.
