African fashion on TLC’s Brides on a Budget Show

Spotted recently on TLC’s Brides on a Budget show was a showcase featuring Miriam whose wedding is just months away in Malawi, Africa but she has only $500 to complete her look. She then trusts her stylist, Kahlana to deliver a look that matches her vibrant personality and is easy on the wallet. I always love seeing African fashion on mainstream television and this is probably an oldie but it’s such a goodie that I thought I would write about it anyway.

TLC’s Brides on a Budget is a show for brides with big style on a small budget. Kahlana met with Miriam and her mother to discuss her needs for handmade accessories. Colour and texture was very important to Miriam and she wanted to get a birdcage veil, a cape and the perfect pair of shoes to complement her strapless, fitted, trumpet-style dress.

Kahlana searched on Etsy and fabric stores to find a range of accessories for Miriam. Her search yielded a lot of beautiful finds and they both went through all the different outfit possibilities. They tried of different accessories and Kahlana showed Miriam how to use both fabric and embellishments to add luxury to a pair of heels. Even though Miriam wanted a cape for her dress, the final look did not include one. Kahlana advised that the cape might be too much and she could incorporate it into a different look for another event.

Eventually, Miriam and Kahlana settled for the look pictured in the first image above, which cost less than $400. Not only was it subtle and tasteful, it ensured that there were not a lot of statement pieces competing for the spotlight. Miriam walked away a happy bride and her mother was pleased with the results as well. The whole show is only about 10 minutes long so I would encourage you to watch it.
