There was no better way for African and Diaspora creatives to jump-start the new year than with a disco-themed brunch and party. Debonair Afrik, in partnership with GH Mumm champagne, hosted the Editors Meet Brunch 2023: De Renaissance of Disco on Monday, January 2, 2023, in Accra, Ghana. High-profile personalities attended this edition of the annual fashion event to invest in a new creative landscape pointing toward the future of African fashion. It also involved networking and capacity-building activities.
“We are in our 6th year of producing the Editors Meet Brunch where we encourage the spirit of collaboration among fashion and style creatives in Ghana and across the African diaspora. It is a true celebration of style and an amazing way for us to kick off the year and make many valuable industry connections,” shared Emmanuel Ekuban, editor-in-chief of Debonair Afrik. “We have been inspired by the Disco Era as it encouraged people to glamorously be themselves on their own terms through music and fashion as an escape from a period of escalating social and economic turmoil in the 1970s. In fact, we can still draw insights and inspiration from this era in dealing with today’s issues while also celebrating black excellence, which is our vision and platform at The Editors Meet Brunch.”
A host of key fashion stakeholders, enthusiasts, and creatives came stylishly decked in their disco best. They included Alexander Julien, Clara Pinkrah-Sam, CEO and founder of Clatural, Selina Bebaako-Mensah, award-winning designer Brommon, Sister Deborah, Mathew Osei – model and stylist and 2022 Best Dressed, Mohale Motaung, Ẹniafẹ́ Momodu, and Ugo Mozie.
All the guests enjoyed an elaborate buffet brunch catered by Menscook GH, cocktails, an afternoon tea bar from Dilmah Tea, and of course, the champagne was provided courtesy of GH Mumm. The afternoon segment of the event featured an interactive fashion panel discussion on the topic “The Impact of Storytelling for The Future of Africa,” which was moderated by journalist and CEO of Every Stylish Girl, Nana Agyemang. The panel speakers were film director Kuukua Eshun, photographer and filmmaker Paul Ninson, celebrity and NBA stylist Rachel Johnson, and Tolu Ayeni, Partnerships for Instagram.
“We are thrilled to raise a toast to the new year while celebrating African fashion and style creatives. GH Mumm is recognized worldwide as the avant-garde Champagne Maison that elevates quality, style, and experience beyond traditional boundaries. Our partnership with Debonair Afrik and The Editors Meet Brunch is a joyful collaboration between two icons of innovation and style,” shares Yannick Koffi, Marketing Activation Manager at Pernod Ricard Western Africa.
With the theme being an ode to the disco era, the event was characterized by up-tempo dance music filled with repetitive vocals and catchy rhythmic beats, trippy lights, and reflective disco bulbs, which created a positive atmosphere for people from all walks of life to come together.
Ghanaian media personality and philanthropist Vanessa Gyan served as the MC, with music courtesy of DJ Stunt and Slybeatz. Miss Universe Ghana, Engracia Mofuman, used the event as a send-off party ahead of her journey to represent Ghana in the upcoming Miss Universe pageant. Live performances included a set by musical nightingale Titi Owusu. Ghanaian music maestro Kwabena Kwabena and the Kwame Yeboah Band performed back-to-back hits with crowd participation to close the show. The evening culminated with DJ Lisa, the official curator of the #TEMbrunch2023 Spotify playlist, and DJ Pizzaro ushering attendees with music into the disco after-party in partnership with Martell cognac for dancing until dawn.
