Hollywood Movie Icons in African Fashion

Can you imagine what some of your favourite Hollywood movie icons would look like in African fashion? The Africa Channel has released a 10-part digital series called “Re-imagining Movie Icons,” in collaboration with Vanichi magazine to celebrate designers from Africa and the diaspora as they pose the question, “What If Movie Icons Wore African fashion?”

The series was launched just before fashion week. Basically, the fashion campaign has taken the top 10 movie icons from the past and re-imagined them in African clothing. The purpose, according to Narendra Reddy, Executive Vice President and General Manager of The Africa Chanel is to “amplify the cultural conversation between African and the rest of the world.” …

Another aim might also be focused on showcasing a diversity of perspectives in how Africa is depicted. The Africa Channel is based in Los Angeles. The channel broadcasts English-language television content from Africa. Featured designers in this fashion series included Obioma (Nigeria), Kenneth L. Nicholson (Los Angeles), Ammanii (Egypt), Sarayaa (Senegal), and M. Andrews (Texas). These are the designers whose clothing can be seen on the re-imagined Hollywood movie icons and who are leveraging this opportunity to showcase their talent before a greater audience.

I’ve written about African fashion in the popular Black Panther and how that movie opened many doors for African fashion’s growing influence on Hollywood. After watching the trailer above, I think the finished work in the series is in many parts very stylish and tasteful. The full 10-part series is available via The Africa Channel and Demand Africa.

I’d like to see a model dressed as a modern day Elizabeth Taylor in a 50s inspired gown with luxe details like silk mixed with batik print, beading…. ( :

Ouuuu! I like your thinking… silk mixed with batik print… maybe even a little bit of lace – luxury!

      Hello Emily,

I agree! I think one of my favourite looks would have to be the one of Marilyn Monroe.
