Pharell Williams’ Adidas Shoe Collection is another testament to Africa’s influence on mainstream fashion. Adidas has collaborated with the musician and fashion designer to create a collection of colourful athletic footwear called Solar Hu. The colours of the running shoes come in a single style along with eight pieces of active wear that all draw their inspiration from East African flags. When asked about this decision Williams says, “Africa is a beautiful confine and the origin of civilization.”
When the first Hu collection launched in 2016, Williams described it saying, “Hu is short for human – human being, human race, humankind, but Hu, itself is also a reference to colour. As human beings, we all have a colour. We all look different, we all speak different languages, but we’re all connected.” Therefore, Solar Hu celebrates the hues of humanity and acts as a stability shoe for the long distance runner.
The shoes come in three complimentary colour schemes – shades of red, yellow, orange, green, white, black and cyan as inspired by East African flags. Made out of a breathable mesh material, the vamp of each pair is embroidered with the Hu logo. Although Williams previous collection for Hu was a tribute to tennis, the Solar Hu collection takes its inspiration from the culture of long-distance running associated with East Africa – a region that has bred many long distance runners. Williams calls this fresh focus on the running sport as “a state of meditation.”
The shoes from this vibrant Adidas collection retails online for $150 via the Adidas website. Grab yours and you might be able to represent the hues of humanity from East Africa. For more information, read up the official press release from Adidas on this shoe collection at their website.
